abortion onscreen
Abortion Onscreen database, 2017.
A project of ANSIRH’s Abortion Onscreen program, this online database aims to include all American film and television depictions in which a character obtained an abortion (or disclosed that they had had one in the past). The database can be searched using a variety of criteria and is frequently updated to include new plotlines.
Early abortion training workbook, 5th edition. 2016.
This workbook helps clinicians: identify key elements of informed consent and counseling; recognize psychosocial issues for women seeking abortion; understand the basic steps involved with first-trimester aspiration and medical abortion; and identify common complications of first-trimester abortion care.
Supreme Court affirms that abortion restrictions put women's health, safety and well-being at risk. 2016.
This fact sheet outlines the evidence behind a significant 2016 Supreme Court decision on abortion access. It details how restrictions imposed in some states are not based on medical evidence and will do nothing to improve women’s health and safety. These requirements put women at risk by standing in the way of safe reproductive care.
In their own words: Experiences of women denied abortions. 2016.
This video describes women's experiences of seeking abortion care in Bangladesh, Colombia, Nepal, South Africa and Tunisia. Produced by the the Global Turnaway Study team and researchers in each country, it tells the story of why women are denied legal abortion services and the consequences of denial.

In this 2012 study, we examined how state budget cuts have affected organizations that provide teen pregnancy prevention programs and services.
Latina voices: Findings from a study of Latina teen childbearing in the Fresno and Los Angeles areas​. 2011.
Findings from this study highlight the many challenges faced by primarily low-income, pregnant Latina teens living in the Los Angeles and Fresno areas, the regions in California where the highest numbers of Latina teen births occur.
Adolescents and parental notification for abortion. 2008.
This brief details current laws in other states that limit adolescents’ access to abortion through parental involvement requirements, and draws from existing research to suggest what California can learn from other states’ experiences.

This fact sheet outlines the wide range of fiscal and health benefits of public funding for birth control programs like Medicaid and Title X.
Better birth control education reduces unintended pregnancies. 2015.
The Bixby Center's provider training on IUDs and implants successfully reduced unintended pregnancy among teens and young women aged 18-25 years.  This fact sheet summarizes the findings of a large national study.

The Bixby Center partnered with Bedsider to create accessible and eye-catching educational materials for young adults. These include charts comparing the effectiveness of birth control and emergency contraceptive methods; a poster explaining IUDs for emergency contraception; and a poster showing the risks of birth control use.

Education and training

Reproductive Health in Nursing website centralizes reproductive health care advocacy, research and training information for nurses, including:
  • Nursing education modules in unintended pregnancy prevention and care. Self-guided nursing education modules designed for students to improve their understanding, clarify their values, and learn ways to integrate best practices in unintended pregnancy prevention and care into clinic settings.
  • Reproductive justice resources. A collection of resources to help nurses understand and incorporate reproductive justice principles into both clinical and advocacy work.
  • Policy and advocacy news. Centralizes updates on the latest policy positions of leading professional nursing associations and information on regulations that affect nurses' ability to provide reproductive health care.
Innovating Education in Reproductive Health courses:
  • Abortion: Quality care and public health implications. This innovative six-week course addresses abortion in the US and around the world, framing the issue in a public health context.
  • Explained. This collection of short videos and infographics provides a more accessible overview of the evidence behind key abortion policy topics, including waiting periods, TRAP laws and abortion safety.
  • Managing early pregnancy loss. The curriculum includes didactic narratives, provider testimonials, and live video and animation demonstrating a step-by-step method for surgical early pregnancy loss management. This version of the course is free for anyone to take.
  • This is how I teach. This collection of short videos features providers sharing training tips and approaches related to specific reproductive health care topics and skills.
Bixby Center online training hub offers the following trainings:
  • An update on long-acting reversible contraception. This free online training is a primer on IUDs and the contraceptive implant, and is suitable for all types of healthcare providers and support staff.
  • Managing early pregnancy loss. The curriculum incorporates video modules, quizzes and on-line resources to support an evidence-based and patient-centered approach to miscarriage management. It provides a comprehensive review of diagnosis and treatment of early pregnancy loss.  This version of the course is for Continuing Medical Education credits.
