The Bixby Center invites you to a seminar:
Fatwas, Family Planning, and the Future: Reproductive Health in Iran
Carolyn Sufrin, MD, MA and Jennifer Kerns, MD, MPH
Fellows in Family Planning
Department of Ob/Gyn
In this talk, Jennifer Kerns and Carolyn Sufrin will describe the historical, religious, and current context of family planning in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Iran has been lauded for having one of the most successful family planning programs in the region. How did this happen? What is the current accessibility of contraception and abortion in Iran? How do religious norms influence the acceptability of various methods? Based on our experiences as family planning consultants in Iran, we will highlight the ways in which contraception has been actively promoted in a theocratic state, with attention to the Revolution of 1979 as a pivotal moment for reproductive health.
